Website Design + Kate Sutton

Did you know that I also did freelance  web design? No? Well, I do.  I offer web design services to small to medium sized businesses, and have done so for years. I don’t do as much as I did before I had Orla, and it’s not my main preoccupation, but I do enjoy it. Ironically, given my numeracy block, I have always found web design and coding easy. When I look at a page of html, css, php, javascript, it seems to make sense to me. Why this is…who knows.

Anyway, about a week ago, an artist called Kate Sutton contacted me, and asked me if I would be prepared to rebuild her website on indexhibit. Indexhibit is an artist’s portfolio CMS, and is the platform on which I run my portfolio site.  She had found me on the participants list. I told her my rates, and she gave me the go ahead (by the way, don’t be put off by the Indexhibit basic home page, they just aren’t bothered about how it looks, they care more about how it works).

We chatted about what she wanted, how she wanted the site to look, and she gave me a choice of two illustrations with which to base the livery on and use as  a ‘splash’ page, I suggested she handdraw the logo, which she was keen to do. Kate wanted a simple, clean and elegant design. In a way, her choice of design very much reflects her style of illustration, which is clean, unfussy and whimsical, and I believe is styled as ‘folklore art’. It’s lovely, go have a look.

Once having negotiated the vagaries of her hosting package, the site was pretty much built in a day, maybe a day and a half, and I also managed to get indexhibits quirky blog ‘plug in’ to work, and have her blog load into a page of her website. She asked for some minor revisions, and was happy with the result. The screencap here is not featuring the image on her main page, but is my favourite.

So, I am very pleased with the result, and very pleased to have got to know Kate Sutton. Nice woman, talented artist.
