Artsy Birthday Goodies!

April 5, 2011 by Lorrie

It was my birthday today and my hubby and little girl spoilt me rotten. I had to share some of the fabulous things I got that were art related.

Firstly, books on Mixed Media, Printing and more.  I also treated myelf to a mixed media book with some birthday money. Now, it’s been a long time since I bought a book on art techniques and in fact, I don’t think I ever have.  Anyway, mixed media techniques, materials and mediums have move on a lot since I was a student, so I decided to get some books for ideas, techniques, and general guidelines. Plus, my hubby Luke bought me a smashing book on hand printing and a truly monstrous tome all about pattern and surface photography called Heaven and Earth’. Hundreds of fantastic shots of patterns occurring in nature both on earth and in the cosmos. It weighs a ton and the images inside are stunning.

And lastly, my lovely hubby made me a fabulous Bench Hook for my lino cutting. It’s absolutely solidly made, and makes the process much safer.  So…yes, lino cutting. I used to do loads years ago when I was a Fashion & Textile design student, and have been getting back into it. I will post more about it another time.

Awwww Jeanette, I wish you lived closer too. And thank you, such a lovely thing to say. I can’t wait to get started with all the boooks, though they may have to wait until after my show. So much work to do at the moment.
      xx

Rona. Get it, you wont be sorry. It looks fab and the images inside are gorgeous. It’s simple, well laid out, easy to follow and has good projects in it. All together, a really lovely book.

Thank you Alice. I am also making some stationery that will feature my prints. I have LOTS of projects on the go, and too few hours in teh day I think.

How cool is that? Hooray for supportive husbands, huh. :)

I used to buy technique books all the time, but oddly enough, I never purchased a single book explaining how to paint CATS! Or any animals for that matter… so the landscape and still life tutorials lost their charm after awhile.
Your birthday loot has prompted me to go shopping for a quality art book on cat painting. Ummmm can I pretend it’s my birthday too?
All I got was a sewing machine that is too contrary for me to play with. :P

I know. I am very lucky. He is not great at the feedback, and his response tends to be a fairly uniform one ‘very nice bunny’. But, he never complains about buying supplies for me, or providing/making things for my art. In fact, he has just got me a new desk for my work room, and it’s HUGE.

As for that kitty tutorial book. Go get it and make it an early birthday pressie.

I figured the goodies would have to wait till after your show… I got myself a special treat of a project that I am saving for when all my current online courses are over. I’ll get to it around mid June hopefully, but till then I can cuddle the goodies the postie brought me for it today, LOL

      Hello my darling.
Do you mind really waiting until then? I have so many letter art pieces to scan, including my J and my M. But as you have correctly surmised. I am struggling to get my work done at the moment. I will however, work hard to get your goodies to you well before then.

Happy Birthday Lorrie….hope you had a great day…love the books and hope they give you much inspiration for your super art.

Stone swap sounds good to me…would love to own one of your creations…..drop me a line when you fancy doing it.

      Aahh, thanks Vic. xx
I am working on pieces for a show in June. And, as soon as I am done, I will get stone painting again. And, finish all the ones half done. My little girl swipes them you see. Oh, and she LOVES your little bug stones, and is nagging me to paint one for her.

A belated very Happy Birthday to you Lorrie xox

Great pressies! I’ve actually had my eye on a couple of those books too – the journals and sketchbooks one and the print book. You may have twisted my arm…!

      Hi there Angie.

      Thank you sweety :)
As for the books, they are lovely to have and look at, even if you never actually use them. But, I will. Probably after my shows, as I have so much on my plate at the moment.
I can’t wait to get started on the sketchbook ones.

      xx

Beautiful gifts. I’m intending spending my birthday money on marketing Bournemouth Creative Breaks, so I’ll swallow any envy I might have felt and have vicarious birthday presents instead! xx
