My Arty Etsy Treasury

I don’t do them generally these days as I don’t have the time. But, given I am confined to bed at the moment with a bad cold and unable to work, I decided to put together an arty Etsy Treasury of some of the art and art related items I most covet at the moment.

I was able to feature this treasury including clickable links by using this nifty TOOL created by Martin at WhaleSkark Websites, and brought to my attention by the talented Helen.

I decided to experiment with some of my black and white ink work, and manipulate them with textures, colourising etc. I have done lots of this kind of thing in the past with my photography but not with my artwork. So, I chose the piece below as I felt it would lend itself well to the tecnnique. I used an old manuscript texture I found on deviantART, altered the colours a bit and some more jiggery, pokery and voila. I may list this one as a print at some point if I get any interest.

I have come to a big decision about my art, and that is to stop fucking around and do the work I know I am capable of, and that I want to do. Basically, in essence, I am upping my game. My drawing has been too simplistic and prosaic of late. I have become complacent, lazy and almost afraid of hard work artistically speaking, or attempting anything that might be too challenging or complex. I seem to have mislaid the whimsy I had, and the ability to just put pen to paper and allow the drawing to create itself and be daring. I spend too much time worrying about the saleability of an idea and subject rather than doing what I want, doing things to please others and not doing what drives me, and letting loose the images and creatures of my dreams, those that hover at the edge of my vision and consciousness. I need to capture those hazy and fleeting pictures and ideas that haunt me. I need to try harder, I need to be darker, I need to be better, I need to do more.

New Art Shop on Illusio’s Blog

Well, I have decided to close my art shop on zen cart called Art4sale, which I have been thinking of for a long time. Art4Sale will only be open one more week. My reasons are thus. Too much work, not enough return. Simple as that. So, I have installed and configued an ecommerce plug in on here, and am listing prints, postcards, and original art.And, the link to it is going to be in the sidebar, and is up there in the menu.

It’s a simple feature, you don’t have to register, you just add something to you cart, put in your address and proceed, and it takes you to your Paypal account. That’s it. No fuss, no bother…

Do go have a looksee, any feedback is always appreciated.

Mark Fennell – Portrait Artist

Mark Fennell is a very talented artist based in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, who specialises in portraiture and figurative work. His medium is predominantly oil paint on canvas. His work is searching, insightful and skillful in execution. His style though contemporary, evokes for me the precision and detail of the old masters.

Mark and I went to school together, and then onto art college. He specialised in graphic design, though changed his discipline some years ago. He holds many distinguished awards, and has received more than one special commendation in prestigious art competitions, as well as being an elected member of The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

Commissions include Anthony Worral Thompson, John Otway and John Hood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

The piece below entitled ‘Len’ is my favourite of Mark’s studies. I loved this piece the very first time I saw it. The dignity and pathos of the individual reaches out from the painting and draws you in. The texture and detail of the hands and face are wonderful, and one is left wondering much about Len’s life and what took him to this point. His face old and tired, but retaining immense strength of personality and verve. The eyes that gaze out from the painting have seen much, and a lifetime of toil and struggle is writ there. The hands though gnarled and old, still retain much of their strength. It’s testimony to Mark’s ability as an artist that he has been able to imbue this painting with so much of the subjects personality. I remain, deeply impressed.

CASS Sculpture Estate, Goodwood

This week, I spent some time with my good friend Rona, doing something we both enjoy, being out in the country taking pictures. Those of you who enjoy photography will know, this really is a pastime you spend on your own, or with a like minded crony. We went to the CASS Sculpture Estate at Goodwood, which has been on our ‘to do’ list for some time.

It started out as a glorious sunny day, which became progressively darker and colder. Sadly, this meant we were unable to shoot as many of the works of art as we intended, as many are installed deep within the woods, and there was not sufficent light to take a decent shot. We also tried to approach our subjects from a less traditional view, and incorporate an ‘abstract’ perspective. Rona and I really enjoyed ourselves and managed to take some great shots, despite getting very cold, and a bit muddy. Rona is great company, and has a good eye for composition. Not only did she tak some great shots of the art, she took a couple of shots of me which are extremely good, one of which I feature here.

‘Affordable Art Fortnight’ at the Joy Gallery in Chichester.

New Work + Ralph

Just a fly by post to show off the following.

Three little finished canvases, freshly varnished (the tin foil was a tip from Jessica Doyle, and they don’t stick). These little paintings are to go on show at the Affordable Art Fair at the Joy Gallery in April with some other pieces, I am dropping them off tomorrow. I should mention they have all been taken this evening by the light of my desk lamps, hence the yellow hue to everything.

Next, is a acrylic and ink illustration of Autumn leaves, which is/was part of an ongoing theme I started a few months back. The original (along with the others in this series) are not for sale, though I have scanned this one and it will be on sale as both an A4 and an A5 print in the next couple of days.

And, last but not least, I would like to introduce you to Ralph, the latest addition to my working space courtesy of the talented and rather interesting Kirsten Miller of Quernus Crafts. I love him. I want another one.
